I am happy with my 284-Win for 600 and 1000 yards, but particularly more so for 1000 yards. For 600 yards I would like to try something different, such as one of the 6mm cartridges. Several of my shooting friends shoot and enjoy great success with some of these; namely, the 6mm BRX, BRDX, Dasher, and TAC40.

I understand that the final successful performance will be highly dependent on me, but I would appreciate if you would share your insights on these cartridges; primarily, pros and cons not only in shooting performance, but also in producing these rounds.

    Thanks!

    Alex

    PLEASE NOTE:
To avoid confusion and make it easier as to whom I am, I have changed my user name from Nando-AS to Alexander-M. Nando was my nickname as a youngster, and it should be easier to identify me by my proper name, Alexander, now that I am a little older.

    6BR 1 - 7.5 or 1 - 8 twist 28 inch 4 groove with the 103 - 108 pills.

    1, Great brass.
    2, No fire forming.
    3, Great BBL life.
4, East to tune...and will stay in tune longer because of #3.
    5, Low recoil.
    6, Lots of load data,
    7, 8, 9, and 10......ACCURATE AS HELL!!!!

    ok for 600
yes the 6br will do fine!

    6mm dasher.
a little more work than the br, but a little more case capacity.

6bra... am improved 6br....more than a 6br.. good current history

any of the three, but for 1000 i would look at the dasher and the 6bra

6 BRX - pros and cons similar to Dasher, but, since I shoot one, I had to add it. Fireform with the false shoulder method and shoot matches at the same time - surprisingly accurate.
Seriously, you won't go wrong with any of the cartridges mentioned.

    .

That would suck as a 600 yard gun.

Agree......BRX, Dasher, BR-A......All AWESOME!!! Just thought that the whole FF thing might not be his cup of tea. I figured for 600 the little BR has plenty of HP.

Agree 100%-I overlooked the yardage-excellent to 300-350 yds max. Stupid suggestion on my part.

If it has to mag-feed, I like the 6XC and 6mm Creedmoor, now that Lapua 6.5 Creedmoor brass is available.

For a single-feed solution, I like the BR Ackley. Just load and shoot -- no fancy fire-forming (creating false
Shoulder) required. You can load normally as a 6BR, and the case fills out in your chamber. Go ahead and shoot for accuracy during that first firing. It gives you enough extra capacity to get in that nice accuracy node, with low ES.

How does one make an 6BR Ackley 40 degree shoulder without fireforming or hydro forming the 6BR case?

    Musta missed that one.

I think he meant there was no die forming or turning a false shoulder, just load and shoot

Great responses so far, and very good information!

I will be using the new BOLT rifle for F-Class matches; for sure at 600 yards, and maybe at 1000 depending on how it compares with my current 284-Win rifle.

One of my concerns, since I have never done anything along these lines before, is creating the brass cases. I believe that the 6 BR brass is readily available, but will have to be made for the others. I have read about fire-forming even while shooting in a match, as mentioned above, as well as the COW process, and others; any of which would be new to me. I do expand the 6.5-284 for my 284-Win, and turn the necks, so this at least I know how to do.

    Thanks!!!!!!!!

if you are considering 1000 go back to my original answer.

of the bunch i think the 6bra is easiest to form, add neck turning.

If you decide that you would prefer to avoid fireforming shoulders forward. You can also consider 6x47L. Just neck them down from 6.5.

I use a 6SLR for a windy day mid-range rifle as well as a calm day 1,000 yd. Good Lapua brass, load and shoot fireforming. .322 long neck, velocity I'm running is 3,122 fps with 110 SMK bullets out of a 7.5 twist. This combination will shoot inside any of the above listed cartridges for f class.
    I hope this helps,

    Lloyd
