Gold Box-Blue Box

timeout

Silver $$ Contributor
I read about the differences between the older Gold Box, versus the newer Blue Plastic Box Lapua brass, but did not store the info in this feeble old brain. What are the differences? Thanks in advance for your responses.

New Blue box brass in 6 br is of a thinner neck.0125 where Old Brass God box is .0135 thickness. You determine if that makes a difference????? for you rifle and chamber dimensions.

DO NOT TAKE THOSE WORDS AS GOSPEL

We've been measuring some new "BLUE BOX" Lapua 6mmBR with neck thickness running up to .0135" at different points around the case neck. What I'm saying is do not "ASSUME" all blue box 6mmBR brass has thin necks. It is up to everyone to measure your cases to determine exactly what you are dealing with to avoid running into serious problems.

I do not have particular lot numbers, but the discussion came up a couple weeks ago at the NBRSA Long Range Nationals and several shooters using "Blue Box" 6mmBR brass mentioned having to take a serious clean up cut on their necks to get proper clearance in their chambers cut with "Blue Box" specific "No Neck Turn" chamber reamers.

Richard,
Good advice for everyone and not just 6br brass either, measure it before you blindly chamber it and pull the trigger, don't take everything for granted just because you read it on the internet ;)

There ARE NO differences. There was a minor adjustment to the neck wall thickness (but no change to the dimensional specs used before or after) to get the cases to run a bit closer to the middle of the specs, rather than the high end, where we'd been running them previously. This amounted to less that .001" total, or about .0003"-.0004" per side.

That this adjustment coincided with the introduction of the new blue plastic boxes was exactly that; pure coincidence. As a result, you'll find earlier and later runs of 6mm BR brass in both types of boxes. Again, the box means absolutely nothing in terms of when the brass was run. Measure the brass, and size or turn as appropriate for your chamber/neck dimensions.

There is evidence to show that turning the neck with typical neck turning tools may actually be LESS dimensionally accurate than the factory spec.

Speak for your own turning. I measure mine. [br]
BTW, can you share this evidence of which you write?

For my .269 neck chamber with the blue box Lapua I still need to turn to .012 per side this gives me a loaded round of .012+.012+.2431= .2671 it's not a complete cleanup more like 70%.

I have one chamber at .272 and another at .2704, I measured loaded rounds last nite, loaded Blue box was .267 to .2675, Gold box .268 to 2685 all loaded with Berger 62 mef, both are fine in either rifle, but i reserve the Gold Box for the .272 chamber. Maybe there is no difference between Blue box and Gold Box as per Lapuas contention, if so I need to toss my micrometer and get a new one micrometer.

areaone,
You need to reread Kevin's post, that is not exactly what he said.
