Bullet stop Target Stand

I built a portable target stand form a combination of pvc and wood frame target holder that I am happy with. What I would like is to have a deflector or catcher for the bullets behind the frame for safety. I want to keep the weight down as much as possible. My target holder is approximately 3 foot wide by 4 foot tall. Most of the time I am testing more that just one rifle, or more than one load, therefor then need for several different targets on the frame. I have access to fallen timber, dirt, and steel. All of this need to be portable. This target will be out in a farmed field. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Apparently you're talking about center fire rifles. I'm thinking that the only thing you could use that would be even remotely portable would be a steel bullet trap and one capable of containing heavy center fire loads would weigh a lot!

If there was a lot of weight to it, if it would be in smaller sections, that might work. Im going to be the only one there, and I don't want an accident handling heavy materials that are awkward to begin with, out in the meddle of nowhere.

Build it out of metal with some forward slope to the metal so the bullets would be directed into the ground. Single piece and put it on skids so it can be moved with a truck or tractor. Make the target frame and backing all mounted on the same skid and just pull it around for various yardages.

No truck or tractor available. I'm thinking of having the sloping metal like you're talking about in a see section where you just slide smaller pieces of metal into the frame. What do you think the thinnest metal could be used? Quarter-inch? 1/8"? This will mainly be for 270 caliber bullets.

Thought you said it was a working farm. And no tractor, must be something new since I don't farm anymore.

Anyway, when I was shooting High Power silhouette target were made mostly of 3/8ths metal. Some 1/4 in for the 500 meter line. Unless it's armor plate you will have problems at the closer yard lines with 1/4 in. 270 maybe okay but sure as hell somebody will want a big 30 then the fun starts. A 308 168 gr MK will shoot through 1/4 in. at 200 meters

I will be mostly shooting at 300 yards and beyond.

This one is heavier than you are thinking of, but might give you some ideas. I built it entirely out of half inch plate and put a couple pockets on the backside so I can pick it up with the tine bucket on my skid steer.

It's roughly six feet wide and four feet tall. I don't think I would try to use anything lighter than 1/4 inch plate, but it's your call.

I will mainly be shooting expanding hunting bullets as opposed to the heavier jacketed hollow points.

I have been very happy with my hang fast targets that I bought on this site. You can look under the sponsored sales section for info. The shillouettes are good size and lean and deflect the bullets down into the ground. A couple of t posts and plates are much lighter than what you are talking about and your paper targets can be set up in front of the plates.

Correction it's under tools, dies, components sale section. Or you can google Hang fast targets.

Don't know where I saw it but one fella used a Farmall tractor tire and put a piece of metal plate in it, bolted to teh bead of the tire in the back. angled a bit and it stopped centerfires...3/8 ich as i recall.
