Autotrickler powder spillage.

Like everyone I love my Autotrickler Autodrop combo with the Area 419 upgrades. But I don’t think the Area 419 straw replacement funnel does enough to control powder splash, even with their big cup. It seams that at least some of the powder goes straight through and a few kernels have enough inertia to bounce out onto the scale.

As an attempt to at least reduce powder splash I cut a small baffle out of card stock and inserted it into the funnel. I cut it about 1/16” larger than the funnel and pressed it in so that the opening is opposite the opening in the funnel. This causes all of the powder to do a complete S turn before exiting the funnel, reducing inertia considerably. It’s a slight press fit so I was able to angle it down towards the notch in the card stock. I’m happy to say that not one kernel bounced out in about 50 test drops!

That's a simple fix Craig. I made a much more elaborate 'Rube Goldberg' device suspended below the drop that has two sequential opposing baffles that works well but is MUCH more complicated than your fix. Kudos!

Craig,
This certainly seems to be a perfect example of the KISS (*) principle; and best of all, it won't cost anything to try it out.
Nice going!

I was looking at these area 419 upgrades last night. Does the auto throw come with the electronics to hook it up? It just looked like the parts.. all I have is the scale and auto tricklet right now.

I put 2 baffles on my drop tube from my Uniflow and it does help. Seems to work better with ball powder than extruded. Maybe not an auto trickler but the idea works not perfectly but it works,

I’ve made a couple fixes for this problem and both have reduced the splash to almost zero. One is to just cut a little piece of a rubber glove and zip tie it on. The other is to head to hardware store and search electrical cable shrouding.

Both are flexible enough to allow cup to go under but hang low enough to prevent splash.

I like you card stock fix too.

The new versions of the Autotrickler have the output port and programming to run the Autothrow. The Area 419 parts are nice but not necessary for proper function of the Autotrickler/ Autothrow combo.

@F Class John ….. what is that little bit hanging from the end of your trickler tube? (the trickler tube in the photo...to clarify for the demented ones;))

Robin
It’s a reducer. Helps control he final kernels a little better. Someone here sells them and he also sells them on eBay. About $16 I think for a small and large reduced set.

Does this reducer help the "one kernel short or long" syndrome? A link or user name would be great.

Did you guys try using the plastic straw and cup that come with the Autotrickler and Autothrow? They don’t seem to have these issues.

Spent $6.00 at WalMart for a set of stainless steel measuring cups, use the second largest... nothing bounces out. Took a disc sander to the printed plastic base that came with my AutoTrickler so the dispensing tube tip is aimed about 1/8" higher than horizontal. Fixed the errant kernel problem.

The Area 419 “chokes” for Adams auto tricker are a significant improvement to obtaining perfect powder accuracy using the auto trickler. Hard to believe the increased productivity on the powder accuracy process if you are OCD. Using Varget, my kernel drop variance with the Area 419 choke (if any) is 1-2 kernels. For the competitive shooters who don’t give a flip about a perfect powder charge, sleep on the thought that you might lose a tourment because of your powder charge
What’s another $20?

What chokes are you referring to, just checked there website but couldn’t find any chokes for the Autotrickler?
