    Neck Tension on a 308:

Does this caliber fall under the .002-.003 rule or
does it require VERY tight neck tension like
my 30BR. I havent loaded anything for this rifle.
Some advice in advance doesnt hurt.
    Thanks LDS

I've always had good sucess with 0.002 with my F/Tr loads. (unturned lapua brass) In fact, I once changed bushings, thinking the new one was .335. Accuracy went all to pot. Turns out the new bushing was 0.002 undersized.

    Interference fit? Crush fit?

A builder of Bench Rest type rifles called and said a new proud owner of one of his rifles was complaining about 'loose necks'. I ask about accuracy, nothing wrong with accuracy the new owner is complaining about loose necks. I bundled a few dies then went for a visit. With 1,000 upon 1,000 of cases to choose from I decided on L.C. match 30/06. I formed the 30/06 cases to 308 W. In the process I tightened the necks. When finished the new proud owner had .002" clearance between the case neck and chamber neck.

I have used .002 for most of the time I've been shooting .308, which has been a long, long time.

For me, the answer to you question is "yes, use a sizer neck .002 -.003 less than the loaded round diameter."

Seems every rifle is different. On current F/TR rifle, I've played with .001 to .0035" and it shoots best at .0025".

From these findings, the rule of the day on the
308, is very light neck tension. Thanks to all who
    replied. LDS :) :)

I run about .003 but each load will be different and you may find your experience is different. Start with 2 to 3. Do load development and see what you get.

I personally dont like running .001 as i tend to jam projectiles.

This is for single shot target rifle BTW. magazine fed or semi would need at least .003 i would guess (just use the standard dies they have heaps of neck tension)

    I run around 2 to 2.5 thou. I use a 334 Bushing for 336 to 3365 loaded round.

I am a reasonably serious 308 shooter that is still learning how to wring that last x out of every range. I have a 342 chamber neck size and use a 336 Redding neck bushing for loading 155 Berger Hybrids in Lapua brass. That puts it in the 1-2 thou range. I have just started to anneal every firing with my DIY induction annealer time will tell if the last step will make anything more consistent.

I have shot the 200 Hybrids at very fast speeds for competition but it chews through the cases and barrel life. its not always all about winning. Well it is but I am not prepared to pay the cost for it all the time.

It's a reasonably sane one, though. A real treat and rarity!

Hmmm....."Serious 308 shooters"......I guess anyone not looking for sub 3/4", isn't a "serious" shooter....BS. We take our shooting just as seriously as competition shooters do, but we recognise when enough is enough for our purposes.

I load with 0.001" neck tension. I have tried 0.002" but the consistency wasn't there between rounds.
