Annealing - Infrared non contact thermometer

Ditto no go on this. I even tried blackening a case to reduce reflectivity with little improvement.

Thanks guys, good to hear of your experiences.

I mentioned on this website I was using a Harbor Freight infra red pyrometer for my lead pot. Someone commented that a pyrometer has to be calibrated for the emisssivity of the material your checking. I have no idea what the error is. Anyhow others have pointed out you cannot measure thru a flame. If you remove the case from the flame it is cooling at about 100F/sec.

I have one, tried it for annealing, it is not appropriate for the purpose. It's better for monitoring the temperature of your barrel.

While I agree it doesn't work for annealing, I wasn't happy with the results mine gave for monitoring barrel temperature either.

Instead, I use temperature monitoring adhesive strips like these http://www.omega.com/pptst/RLC-50.html . The only issues with them are (a) getting them to stick . . . need to thoroughly de-grease the barrel at the attachment point . . . and (b) not so easy to use on AR platforms.

I read a post somewhere recently regarding the use of an infrared non contact thermometer as an alternative to Tempilaq - just wondering whether anyone has any comment ?

Here's one example:

They don't work for some metals, in particular brass. I'm on the John induction mailing list and post number one I was advised against using one. can't remember the specifics but maybe due to refraction.
