What action length? If it's a long action consider a 6.5-06 AI.

Make sure to give it a chance no matter what that bore scope tells you. My last 6.5/284 barrel looked really really bad at 700 rnds. But it won many matches till it finally gave up at 1358 rnds, when I took it off. Just to let you know it would still shoot under 1/2" for 5 shots at 200 yards. At 500 yards it was greater than 5".

If the throat is in bad shape, chances are it won't look good 2 1/2-3" down the bore. But if it looks decent and you just want to go to a smaller case, you might be surprised how well a 24" bbl. will perform in a smaller 6.5 like the Creedmoor or 6.5x47 Lapua. I shot 1000 yd. prone pretty successfully with a 24 1/2" in an accurate 7-08 (some cleans) until it wore out. More velocity does result in less wind drift, but a good accurate barrel can do quite well even @ 24" in 6.5 & 7mm.

6.5mm-06 aka similar to .256 Newton plus a few variants of these original wildcats and even a AI version.
