Yesterday was the championship match at St Thomas Sportsman’s Groundhog match. The conditions were far from good with the wind doing some crazy things. Those of you who have shot here before know that it is tricky on a normal day and yesterday was way worse than that. The Heavy Sporter class was what he was shooting in and you shoot 5 shots for score at 100, 200, & 300 yards.
The 100 yard relay he was dialed in and shot a 50-2x.

The 200 yard relay he struggled like almost everyone else in figuring out the wind. As soon as you thought you had it, it would switch. He ended up with a 45 on that target.

Once the 300 yard relay came around he thought he was out of the running and I told him he didn’t need to worry about that and to just concentrate on having a good 300yd relay. After a couple of sighter shots he felt ready and let 5 fly at the score target. His first shot was an 8 that went left on him and the next 3 were 9s that also went left. The last shot he nailed a 10 low on the ring for a score of 45.

When he went down to check his scores after they had scored his target he come back and said he finished 3rd. I gave him a fist bump and congratulated him on some really good shooting especially given the conditions. Once I finished my relay that was after his, I went down and was checking out the scores and I could not find one that was higher than his on the paper. A couple guys come over and started congratulating him on coming in first place. I told him I did not see any scores in that class that was higher than his and he just looked at me as that sunk in. Then a big smile come across his face that was as big as I have ever seen. Several more people come over as the news spread and was telling him good job and congrats. As for me, I could not have been any happier for him and it was surely a proud dad moment. I must say talking to him the night before the match I asked him if he was gonna take it easy on me since it was my birthday and he said “no”. Well he was right he did not take it easy on me or anyone else for that matter.
