The national match loads are I think 43.2 grn. IMR 4895 and the 168 SMK. That loads shoots superbly in every NM M1a I've ever handled.

You could ream them with a standard chamfer tool. Just take out enough to seat the primers.

Just to clarify, your friend gave you some military 7.62 (.308 Win) brass with crimped in primers that he wants you reload. This reloaded ammo will be used in a Savage bolt gun, not a M1A. Give Walt Berger a call for a load suggestion. I used about 43 grains of Varget in my M1A with a 168 SMK which shot well, but a VLD isn't the same as a SMK bullet so a safe starting load will be different, especially if the ammo is to be loaded to magazine length. VLD's take up much case space when loaded to SAAMI specs.

    30EX,

Lake City has used a number of different powders in their Match ammo (M118, M852, M118LR), including IMR4895, WC-750 (similar to W-W 748) and RL-15 (the powder that's currently used). What Federal may be using is another matter, but I'd guess that they're likely using the same powders, among others.

You're not talking about duplicating an existing LC load, though, since you're looking at a bullet (a 168 Berger) that's not used in this type of ammo. Different project. Start from scratch (and any of these powders would be a good place to start), and simply work up a load that delivers about 2,600 FPS (M852 was set at 2,550 @ 78 ft). Frankly, I'd be amazed if any of these combinations didn't shoot beautifully.
