6XC brass question

What am I overlooking?.... I just received an order of 6XC Norma brass from SSS and an order of the same from Midway...
SSS ... $69 per 100 Midway ... $26.49 per 20
This is my first 6XC. I have measured and weighed and cannot convince myself of a difference in the 2 suppliers.

I find it fairly easy to beat Midway's pricing on most items. I can beat their 6XC die pricing by $6. And Berger bullets by an average of $8.

Mr Tubb buys 6XC brass directly from Norma in batches of probably more than 100K. Midway probably buys under 10K at a shot. IIRC I think I was told either by Dave or someone working there or close affliate that he bought 500K the first batch????? Maybe I am all wet and my memory bank is getting dust but I sure seem that was reliable info.

Maybe you should have questioned Midway on the price before you ordered it. (?) That is an outrageous price for 6xc Norma brass.

In my experience Norma brass is pretty consistent stuff. ;) WD

D. Tubb comissioned Norma to make brass for his cartridge design. He might have a contract that gives him an advantage on price over other vendors. I don't know where you can buy Norma 6XC brass other than his SSS or Midway, my guess SSS sells more by far considering the history of the stuff.

You can make it out of pretty much any brand of 22-250 brass of course but you'll still pay more per hundred than what cases from SSS cost ready to shoot.

(You must have bought the last they had. Backordered now, available maybe 4/20/12 thru Midway, $109.99/100.)

I made some 6XC cases last season from Lapua Palma brass. Took some time & effort but they work great... maybe better than anything else if the heads hold primers thru more reloadings....

I have never had any luck with Tubb or Norma marked cases. Always seem to have sticky bolt issues, and I know I dont run hot loads. I have stuck with Winchester or Lapua. If you use the Win brass, you can get that stuff right now for $375/1000 from PVI and the stuff works, very well. I have some I have shot over 20 times and they are still going. After 10 firings I do start watching for case head separation, but so far, I have lost just ONE case and I am still working on the same batch of brass I started with when I went to the 6xc back in 2006.

Lapua makes good 6xc brass too but you have to take care of the doughnut that forms when you fireform it unless you have your bbl throat modified or worn, or you shoot bitty bullets.

For guys that like the Norma stuff, great, but its just not working for me, never has and considering I have a couple thousand pcs of the Tubb marked stuff, well, someone wasted some moola. I use that stuff now for light practice loads, offhand or prone use only as it annoys me to try to shoot rapid and the dang bolt takes more than normal to lift. That doesnt help one's practice.

There are other options out there...experiment, that way you know from personal experience rather than netexperience.

It won't do any good to question Midway about their prices. I have questioned them about their prices on a couple occasions. Their comment is basically take it or leave it. So now I only buy from them when I can't buy it anywhere else.

I guess I wasn't clear enough about questioning their price on the brass. If they had it for approx $1.40 a piece and someone else had it for $.70 for the same brand and caliber of brass, I'm thinking that I'd have left it.... ??? WD

Mudcat,

When did Winchester and Lapua begin making 6XC brass?

I know people make 6XC out of their 22/250 brass but was unaware that you could get 6XC from either maker.

The Norma 6XC brass gave me bolt clicks also BUT, my chamber was cut with a reamer spec'ed to Rem and Win brass. The Norma brass is just a bit bigger above the extractor groove.

They don't. The Norma is the only factory 6XC brass made. Before that it was what D. Tubb contracted for (either from Silver States Armory or another company, I could never confirm which) and made available.

As for the dinensionsl differences... I just finished a PDF file illustrating critical dimensions of brass for 6XC & will post it here shortly once I get back to my computer in a bit....

Correct, neither Win nor Lapua make 6xc but its so easy to make 22-250 into 6xc that even a cave man could do it. Yeah, would prefer to buy it in 6xc form but when I cant get the quality brass that I want preformed, I just make it myself out of good stuff.

This chart I've compiled gives an indication of the range of dimensions possible from both "factory" (available or otherwise) and suitable parent brass.

Many T2k owners with chambers in 6XC experienced what John mentioned, otherwise known as the "dreaded bolt click," myself included. One solution was what was called the Rev. D reamer available around 2007 for chambers cut to smaller dimensions earlier. Some also espoused using a 308 small base die on 6XC fired brass to keep control of case web spread.

Revisions were made to the original 6XC chamber reamer specifications over the years. Perhaps word from David Tubb and/or Hugh Henrickson may be forthcoming to illuminate those.

Anyway, I hope this of interest to others. I tried to be consistent and careful using my digital blade micrometer to gather this information, so take the fourth & fifth decimal place with a grain of salt... this gets really tedious after a couple hours.

File's too big to post here so those interested can download the hi-res PDF here:
