I getting ready to build a 6x47L and was wondering what some of the pros and cons would be if I wanted to go with a 20” barrel. Want to try and keep it light weight but still shoot longer ranges with it. I would be loading the 105gr ELD-X with H4350 and CCI450 primers. Any info is greatly appreciated

    Thanks

    HS,

Nobody has stepped up here so I will try. Most of the loading manuals show loads at 24 inches. So right off if you go to 20 inches you will probably loose about 100 fps ( my experience on a 260 Remington is going form 26 to 30 I got an extra 100 fps). I do not have any experience with 6x47 on short barrels.

So assuming 100 fps, you will enter the trans-sonic region sooner but if you can get 2950 fps on the 105 you will probably OK. My ballistic calculator shows 1292 at 1000.

Thanks David. That’s what my one buddy and I was thinking around 100 FPS. Some of the old data I’ve seen shows 2950 with ease out of a 24” barrel and H4350. I was hoping to get more guys chiming in but I guess no ones ventured into the short barrel realm with the 6x47.

I’ve got a 18” bbl on an XP100 pistol. I am running a 105 JLK at 2950 with several loads on the brass. Able to reach that velocity with both H4350 and Ramshot Hunter and CCI 450’s

Can I ask how many grains of H4350. How far have you stretched it?

Quickload shows you'll loose 125'ish fps going from a 24" to 20" with H-4350 and 105 gr bullet.

    I assume 2,850 fps from a 20" bbl at 60,000 psi.

I ran a 22" for a while. I was right at 3020 fps with 39.9 H4350 once the barrel was run in.

39.5 gr with the 105 hybrids and a 26 inch barrel got me right at 3050. Still shooting very well closing in on 2k rounds.

I've been shooting a 6x47L for about 12 years and have several different barrels all with various lengths. All started at 30". One is now at 24" and has about 2500 rounds through the tube; it still shoots competitively at 1000 yards.

I've believe H4350 to be the powder of choice.

I've found that if you keep the speed anywhere between 3050 and 3080 with a Sierra 107 you'll shoot great groups. You can also slow it down to around 2850 and will also shoot. When you lean on it things can get wonky. I've gone as far north as 41.50gr, but all I found was vertical stringing and wasted brass. Save your powder and the life of your cases and don't go past 40.00gr. Start at 38.00gr H4350 and work up in .50gr increments you'll find your load between 38.50 and 39.70gr. I always use a match primer; either CCI BR4 or Federal 205M. I shoot heavy springs in my BAT actions and early in my testing I pierced the 450s constantly. The cup strength just isn't there.

    I hope this helps.

Your findings are spot on with the old data I have from my last 6x47. I could only get great group with H4350 and with the 105vld and 38.5grs it was running right at 3050.

I just started working up load for my 22" barrel 6 x 47 and I was getting 3150 fps with 41.4 grains of h4350
and CCI 400 primers and my supressor on. I will probably back down to around to 39.6 since this is a brand new barrel and the groups were tighter.
