Posting for a fellow who does serious predator hunting competition. Wants to pursue this for 400-450yd yote shooting when there is no time to use the range finder. Would be used in 3 comps a year and re-barreling annually is totally within his financial capability.

Can this be achieved SAFELY ? Appears that a 6-284 has about 4 more grains of powder capacity than the 6AI.

I think that 4000 fps may be a little ambitious. Maybe with a long barrel you may get it. I don’t get that with my 240 Wby and a 26” barrel.

Wasn’t there a thread recently by a gentleman who built a 6 WSM or something similar? Swear he was launching 75 JLK to 4100 or so. Memory is a little foggy on it.

I did a search before posting and came up with info on 65 and 68 grain bullets reaching or exceeding 4000FPS.

Will specifically search the hunting forum, thanks for the lead.

"I think it was in the hunting section."

Found it! Thanks for the lead, it is in the hunting forum in the "Coyote rifle build thread".

My initial search parameters didn't hit on it.

    I got 3850 with 75 vmax with my 30" 6-284. It wasn't a hot load but a warm one.

I had a 6-284 years ago. The barrel was a Hart 1-12 twist, 28” long. I shot Nosler 70 grain ballistic tips. A stout load of H414 was the powder CHOICE for that setup. Velocity was just over 4000 FPS. Super fun to shoot!

Not to be smart but a gunsmith friend of mine was into all that speed stuff. He chambered two really long identical barrels. One was a 240 Weatherby and the other was a 6MM IMP. He was really disappointed in the Weatherby and said he just couldn't believe the 6 IMP beat the Weatherby that bad. This guy was so technical he set his Ohler chronograph up on 12 feet spacing to be more accurate. Matt

I shoot a 22-6MM AI with a Krieger 1 - 14 twist 27 inchs and shoot 60 gr just over 4200 fps and there not loaded hot. I know I could get at less 150 to 200 fps more.

I have no hold over at 450 yds. From 50 to 450 shoot right at them.

    I also have a 6MM AI Brux 1 - 13 1/2 twist and shoot 70 gr at just over 4000 fps.

I dont shoot either rifle hot. They sure do a good job on Coyotes.

I shoot Sierra Blitz king and they hold up real good.

    If I was to build another 6MM hot rod it would be a 6MM284 with a 1 - 13 1/2 twist. 20190111_152750.jpg

I shot this one at 423 yards and shot middle of front shoulder and damn near over shot him.

I used to have a 22-284 that shot 80 gr Bergers at 3550-3600 fps. This was out of a 27" Brux with either R25 or N570. 4000 fps may be optimistic.

My 6/284 shoots the 88gr Berger around 3450fps so I’m thinking 4000 could be a stretch. Not a hot load but it is right at max in a couple reloading manuals
