Have an S2 in 243 win. Single Shot. . Bought in 1976 for ground hogs & live turkey shoots, back in the day.
Still groups well. Not used much in the now shotgun only area. Live turkey shoots no longer.

Rifle hits eggs at 300 yards. Grandson likes it. The 36 power scope is great for targets. The 6x18 variable better for hunting.

$235. Wow. I was making about $400 a month on the GI Bill in 1976.

Super rifle for sure. Those 53gr. V-Max are pure death on groundhogs, or anything else for that matter. Enjoy it, you've got a winning combination there.

Back in 1984 I bought a used 40XBBR chambered in 222 Rem. That rifle taught me a lesson. Do not buy a used benchrest rifle. The barrel’s rifling was free bore for the first 4”-5”, and the walnut stock was a little spongy in the receiver area do to all the Hoppies #9 that leaked into it. Hindsight is that I should had kept mine if just for the action.

Still will always have a place in my heart for the 40X series rifles.

Now you and stacy are just rubbing it in.

I was at a newly built Cabelas here in MI, and in their used gun room they had a 40X chambered in 243 Win. if I remember correctly. Cabelas wanted $1,800 for it.

I had one in 6mm rem. It was a joy. It was a death on groundhogs. My best memory was that I was in a good long field, I was on the high ground look out over the field. I noticed a groundhog at about 275. That rascal had to have seen me because all I could see was that flat head peeking out of the hole.

Anyone that has ever done much groundhog hunting knows what I am speaking off, when you have been spotted, they will stay very low in the hole with just the top of the eyes and the top of the head poking out. Well , I had all of the faith in the 70gr, Sierra match HP coming out of that 40 X barrel.

Needless to say, the HP done it's job and that groundhog did not slide back down in that hole. I miss that 40X for sure.
