2 guns same caliber

How do y'all go about setting your sizing die for more then one gun of the same caliber? I FL size, and set my die to push the shoulder back about .002 as measured by a hornaday gauge. I have picked up another 6.5 creed.
I see 3 options, set die by directions, reset die each time
(hate setting dies) or set die to longer of the 2 and call it good. I do not shoot competition, just like to shoot groups as small as I can.

I use skip’s die shims. I make note of which shim I use for each rifle in my notes. Works great for me and is very cheap.

Bump 0.001" for the rifle with longest headspace, and if all rifles have good headspace this will give no more than 0.003" bump for the other rifle(s).

I load for a three 308's and I bump the brass giving the rifle with longest HS a 0.001" bump and 0.002" & 0.003" bump for the others.

Pretty much back to go-gauge length as measured on the comparator.
Group sizes are not affected with the 0.003" bump compared to if I had bumped the shoulders 0.002" or 0.001" for that rifle.

I have 2 Ruger #1s in 6mm Rem. One is set up for 87 gr. Hornady, the other is set up for the 105 gr. I found it easier to just get 2 die sets. No fussing around with readjustments or recalibrations.

check out the redding competition shell holder set . I have these and they work well . I have 3 different 7mm-08's that I load for , I just pick the correct shell holder . by using these shell holders you adjust the sizing die to make contact with the shell holder . quick and easy to use .

If in my possession there is a die with the lock ring secured to the die it is not my die. I have no fear of loosing my place, I secure the die to the press with the lock ring. I adjust my dies ever time I use them. Reloaders have a lot of trouble understanding the case, the case can have resistance to sizing; the problem with resistance to sizing is not all cases have the same amount of resistance to sizing. the other problem reloaders have when sizing is determining if the case gets sized then the ram is raised. There are times the case wins because it has more resistance to sizing than the press, die and lube can overcome.

If I want to know if the case gets sized when the ram is raised I measure the gap between the bottom of the die and top of the shell holder, in the old days reloaders solved all of their problems by grinding the bottom of the die and or top of the shell holder, me? I solved all of those problems with a feeler gage.

If I was going to grind the die and or shell holder I would want to know how much grinding would be necessary.

I understand it is not easy top keep up with, RCBS made dies for the 38 Special and then they made a set of dies for the 357 Magnum; reloaders that were afraid of loosing their place secured the lock ring to the die. Reloaders that secured the lock ring to the die purchased the new die set for the 357 Mag, reloaders that were not afraid to loose their place used the 38 Special dies to load 357 Mag cases because the new set was not necessary. And then it got worst, reloaders had 44 Special dies and purchased 44 Remington Mag dies when it was not necessary, most of them purchased another set because the old sets were not designed for the progressive press.

I have 3 1891 and 1 98/09 Argentine Mauser with exactly the same headspace. Ammo interchanges in all 4 rifles.
Unlike guffey I never ever lose a battle sizing a case. My cases are smart enough to know if they do not yield to the Rockchucker that they will be tortured by a vintage A2 and finally by an A4 Big Max.
Any further resistance is futile.

The Redding competition shell holders are nice but not mandatory, I can use feeler gages to accomplish the same task. The reloader spends more time complaining about their little chamber and big dies not being able to size the case down enough to close the bolt. And then there is all that time they spend talking about their custom dies, I use the feeler gage with one die to size cases for 26 different length chambers; that would include short chambers, perfect chambers and chambers that are longer than field reject length chambers.

I could grind the bottom of the die and or the top of the shell holder but I do not find it necessary. I do have a #6 set of Redding competition shell holders, I paid $5.00 for the set, I have never used a shell holder out of the set. I did check them for accuracy, three of them are off by .001" each, for me? Not a problem.

If I may, most of us have our own way of resizing our brass including the methods we've found (over the years) works best for each of us. That is clearly evidenced by all the aforementioned methodologies different folks use to achieve the same goal. So to that end, what I've found works best for me is that I have RCBS Precision mics for each of the caliber's I reload for. I simply mark (using a felt tipped pen) a location on my die and press, where I resized my brass the last time. After measurinmg my fired brass with the Precision mic, I set up my dies to those same last resizied locations and run a piece of fired brass through the die looking for a .002 set back on the shoulders. I then put the brass in the Precision Mic, check the set back and adjust the die (if needed) accordingly and off I go with the rest of the brass, periodically checking the brass with the precision mic. Because we are dealing in such SMALL numbers, I've found the measurement of the brass is the safest (after trying a bunch of above suggested methods) and most accurate to insure the brass gets bumped (.002) as close as humanly possible. Does it take more time...sure it does, but them I'm chasing accuracy and not a methodology that doesn't provide me the consistency I seek.

Alex, I agree 100%. I ordered a set of Skips shims this morning, I will give them the old college try. If all else fails I will just re adjust for each.
