.223 40GR. LOAD

  • Need advice on powder/load  for a 40 gr. bullet in .223 Remington.  Don't have access to range to work up load-need general load that is safe and will usually give adequate velocity and accuracy.

  • My old PD hunting load consisted of Winchester brass, Nosler 40 grain BT, Fed. 205 GMM primers and 27.5 grains of H335 seated to 2.260 as per Nosler manual. This load will probably work in most .223 bolt rifles. I was getting 3650 fps out of a 26 inch barrel..

  • 28g of BLC2 or H335, 40g vmax...spits em at a bit over 3500 fps, any small rifle primer, col at 2.290" in my Savage. These are just about max loads also.
26g of the above will be around 3200-3300 fps also which is the starting loads I used.

  • I can't say I have found a load mine does not like. Even the Fiocchi 40 grain loads shoot 1/2-5/8" in both of my .223's. Back when you could actually buy ammo, Cabelas had some sales on it making reloading little cheaper, plus extra brass.

  • I agree with  the H335 guys and would like to add that 24.5 of AA2200 works well with 40 VMAX also.

  • I don't know the twist of your barrel (maybe I missed it) but I am shooting .223 in a 14 twist barrel.  Here are my combinations:

    50 gr. Nosler BT, 25.0 gr. V133, 3,446 fps, 5 shots in .327"

    40 gr, V-max, 26.2 gr. V135, 3,740 fps, 5 shots in .313"

The range was 100 yards.  My shooting skills are such that someone more steady and with good eyesight could cut those groups in half.
