280 Rem vs 7mm-08 Rem

  • I'm looking at buying a 7mm and have it narrowed down to the 280 or the 7mm-08. Has anyone compared the two in accuracy tests? I stand to gain  a bit more velocity with the 280. The rifle will be used to hunt just about any North American game at some point. Long range accuracy is a must.

  • i have and have had both, let me say the diff is slight, i know of elk taken at 300-400 with both, mulie at longer range. to me the 7-08 has an accurcy edge on the 280 UNLESS- GO TO THE ai VERSION OF BOTH

2-280 AI rem 700 harts 26" etc 140s nosler or Sierra at 3140fps shoot .300-.400 all day - 160s give up about 150fps
    7-08Ai rem 700 hart 24" etc 140s nosler or sierra at 3023fps shoots .300-.400 no sweat. - 160s give up 175fps

Take you pick - i have now switched to the 7-08AI for all western hunting,

  • here is another way to look at it.think 30/06 to 308.both can shoot the same bullets but one can push the heavier bullets a little better at times.your looking at about a 1/2 inch in case size so one will need a little more powder to do as the other for the most part when reloading.

for me I would go with the 7/08 its a great shooter.
shooting can be done every day but shooting one ragged hole is something one needs to work on

  • Let me just say that my 7-08 is just a plain sweet shooter,  ;)
It tends to like bullet weights in the 120-140 range,
It can chuck a 120 Barnes TTSX sub MOA at 3000fps, and you can shoot that thing all day long.

I got it going through that same delema, 25-06, 280 or 7-08 for my son when he was a little younger as his Whitetail hunting rifle. I'm extremely happy I got the 7-08 and I'll always have one in the locker.
    Like I said, it's just a plain su`wheet shooter.

  • Choose a .284 Winchester and you'll have the best of both worlds....

  • I'm on a 7-08 and 7-08AI kick. I really enjoy them. I found a sweet spot with the 162 Amax's at 2675fps out of a 22" barrel. Another very nice thing about the 7-08 is brass availability and cost.

If my 7-08AI remains accurate to 600, it will be my new bench gun. I have only shot it to 300yds.
My 284Imp is nice but I prefer shooting the 08. If you just want to shoot the heavies a bit faster, I would suggest the 284 also.

  • Ken, the 284is a fine round however the 7-08AI will exceed it and do it with less powder, the 7-08 will out shoot it and give up very little velocity with same length bbl and a lot less powder.

  • I don't think that you mentioned what length action you were using - if a long action you would be better served with the 280. With a short action , you could only use the 7-08. Both are proven but I second what has been said. Lighter bullets (120-150) with the 7-08; much wider range with the 280 (120-175).
