  • This "223" primer is the latest Wolf primer.

Anyone test these in their 6 BR loads yet?

  • They're good stuff, I've been using them for years since they appeared.

Check the packaging for the full product number. KVB223 is a standard charge, standard cup primer. KVB223REM is the same charge in a thicker, magnum cup. KVB556 is a magnum primer in both charge and cup thickness.

The KVB223 can pierce in high-pressure cartridges like some 223REM applications and .308WIN for Palma when using Lapua's Palma brass. I had cratering and piercing issues in 6.5 Grendel gas uppers too when I was messing with that cartridge. In all instances the KVB223REM work more reliably and awesome results down range.

Try 'em with the loads you're already using then adjust a bit if you feel the need to. You won't be disappointed.

  • I did a brief test of the Wolf 223 primers vs CCI450 in 6br using Varget and 105 Berger with the following results.
    Wolf 223 -   2829fps, SD 7, ES 21
    CCI450 -     2831fps, SD 6, ES 16

  • I guess I was talking about the 556 primer.  That's the new one.

  • Bradley,
just clarify which primer I tested, it was the QQQSR223 which I purchased from Wideners. According to Wideners it is the newest Wolf primer available and has a thick cup.

    See below for Wideners explanations.

SMALL RIFLE PRIMER (part # QQQSR) - Used as a standard small rifle primer. Perfect for the 30 carbine and 223 standard loads. Many people use this primer in bench and other loads for the 223. This primer is a copper colored primer.

SMALL RIFLE MAGNUM PRIMER (part# QQQSRM) - This is the primer we had before for use in the 5.56 loads and hot 223 loads. A thick cup for the higher pressure. We sold a lot of these primers earlier this year. The new lot is brass colored instead of nickel.

SMALL RIFLE 223 (part # QQQSR223)  NEW NEW  This is the newest primer available in the Wolf line. It is ever so slightly hotter than the small rifle magnum primer and it comes with a brass or copper colored thick cup. This primer can be used in place of the SRM primer or used when a different powder is used that is hard to ignite.

  • Bradley,

Is that the actual WOLF product code printed on the packaging?

It's not fun trying to make sense of a vendor's product description when they change the numbers & expect customers to understand how their numbers compare to what the manufacturer uses to denote which product fits a specific need.

ALL the primers I've bought and used since about 2004 that were made in Russia (Murom plant or Tula ammo) and branded as such, or sold under the PMC then Wolf name have their product codes starting with KVB.

Wideners keeps the KVB and adds the QQQ for some reason:

    http://www.wideners.com/itemview.cfm?dir=278%7C284%7C737

Sinclair uses their own codes but keeps the SR / 223 / SRM part which to me is confusing as heck:

    http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pid=40212/Product/Wolf-Primers

Powder Valley uses the manufacture codes:

http://www.powdervalleyinc.com/ (tab for PRIMERS then TULA)

Be great if everyone spoke the same language....

  • spclark, looked at the packaging.
To confuse maters even more the packaging says "NCSR - .223Rem"  "Made in Russia".
Not sure what primer I really ended up with, although the primer cup appears to be brass.

  • OK, that's what mine says too. Cups are brass-colored. I have some of the original KVB-223 primers that are copper-colored. Those won't stand up to the pressures of Palma loads but have the same charge as the 223REM product - the one with a magnum cup but a standard, SR charge.

The 556 primer is a magnum in both respects, cup AND charge.

No idea what they look like, I've never seen any.

I'll try to post pics here later on of what I have now, just for fun.

  • I am pretty much fed up with the Russian primers. A short time ago, I had to trash all my years worth of SRM recipes because of their change of formula. After that, they changed it again. That's it for me, and now I remain with CCI and Fed. Having said that, I still have about 15,000 of the original PMCs left, which  are solely used for special matches.

Thanks God, I had stashed nearly half a million of the LR ones. Great primer, when properly applied.

The original SRM was a stupendous primer, and misunderstood by many. It was low pressure, and chronoed some of the lowet ESs and SDs I've seen. The main difference between the regular SR and SRM was the cup thickness. The Russians did not understand very well the concept of a magnum primer then.

As to their manufacture quality control, well, is rather interesting, as most everything is machine involved. allowing less human mistakes. So what makes it so different from one lot to the other? Its only when they get paid for a new order that they go into their market to buy whatever raw material is available at the time. Hence the vast difference between lots.

As of today, I have found that no new lot (except the second one)  compares with the original lot brought in by Bob Jones, almost 10 years ago.
