20 PPC info

  • I was wondering if I could get some input on a 20PPC.  I'm wanting to do something a little different to shoot groundhogs with and the 20PPC interests me.

I'll be looking to shoot the 32-40 grainers and want to know what twist is optimal for those bullets.  Also I'm not familiar with the neck diameter of .20 cal bullets for a chamber.  I'd like to atleast skim some off the necks and want to know what neck the reamer should be.  Also I have a PPC die that I intend to use - I'll just swap out the bushing.  Would that work?

  • a 1-9" to a 1-11" is typical of the .20s out there.  obviously go with a faster for the longer bullets.  i think the 11" should work for those bullets

  • Not sure if it is considered a "tight neck" or not,but i turn my necks to .012 that gives me a .228 loaded neck in a .230 chamber...

I don`t know if this is of any help to you or not........

Bore capacity suggests somewhat better than half the life of a .308 Win or .223 Rem and a fair bit better than the .243 Win.

  • I would get a 9 twist. Mine is a 10 twist and it's key holeing with 50gr Bergers. My friend has a 9 twist and does fine with the 50's. We are shooting 204's. How long is appx barrel life with a 20 PPC ? I have seen a 20 PPC that had the
throat eroded after less than 300 rounds. If I hadn't seen the barrel I won't have belived it.

  • I also would go with a 9tw.

    20br and a 20-250 with 9tw and they shoot 39's to 55's very well.

The .20 PPC has a case volume that is less than that of the .20 BR, .20-250, etc. and a 300 round or less barrel life would make these cases less than useful.  This suggests that the 300 round erosion point was either a fluke (soft barrel, etc.) or the shooter was very cautious about things.

I fireformed three hundred brass with pistol powder and schorched the throat for about four inches.

I want a new bbl but it still shoots at a .5 moa. Fouls bad though.

  • I run a 40gr V-Max's  in my 20PPC.
It has a 1in12 26 inch Lilja barrel.
    Shoot unbelievable!
    Shoots flat to 300 metres!

I don't know what the barrel life will be like till I wear it out but if I get a 1000 or more I will be happy!
Barrels are a commodity to me, they are screwed into actions so you can change them ;D

    Cleans up real quick too!

  • What brass do you intend to use.

I have a 1-10 that shoots 40grn V-max into tiny little groups using Benchmark.

Having a similar case capacity to a 204R I would imagine barrel life would be about the same.

Take the step you will never regret it.
