I am using a rifle with a weaver style rail and weaver style rings and am unable to switch to Leupold turn in mounts with the windage screw.  I am going to attempt to shim this scope to see if I can make it work.  I know shimming isn't the best route but this is the path I would like to try first.

Currently if I move the scope ALL the way to the right I am just at the center of the target at 50 yards.  So when shimming do I add shims to the front or rear ring?  Also for my issue do I need to add them to the left or right side?

Thanks in advance for the help.  I am really hoping I will be able to fix this issue this way!

  • If the rings fit the scope tube, where are you coming up with the room for shims? Seriously, your approach is incorrect, period. Get some Burris Signature Zee rings, They have offset inserts available, and will fit your base. Come back when you have the rings if you can't figure out how to set them up. A number of regular posters can help you with that.

  • As said above; the Burris Signature Zee rings are the way to go. Had a Ruger #1 re-barreled & the 'smith must have off-set the scope mounting quarter rib because when I tried to sight-in I quickly ran out of windage adjustment to the right. Changed to the Zee rings with the off-set inserts & by using the +/- 020" inserts now have the rifle sighted-in and the windage adjustment is in the center of its travel. If you need more windage to the right, you will need to move the front of the scope to the left Scope body is always moved in the opposite direction of where you want the bullet(s) to go. example: Those needing more up clicks for longer distances always lower the front of the scope, sometimes by using the tapered bases. The Burris Signatures do the same job, but at less cost.

  • Just out of curiosity, what kind of rifle has the screw holes so far off.If the gun is new, send the thing back and make them fix it. Even if it isnt new most companys will do it right.

  • I have the same problem with a pre '95Savage where the sight base holes are 0.045" off towards the front. Savage has new owners and they will not fix prior to '95 "problems. I might suggest going to your gunsmith and see if re-drilli.ng to 8-40 screws won't put the holes where they're supposed to be- I believe the holes were improperly placed. It comes down to cost, re-drill/rings

  • Another Burris Signature Zee recommendation here. I use them on many of mine. I just hope you don't need 30mm medium as they are like "hen's teeth"!

  • I have a Rem 722 action from the 1960s originally in .222. Rebarreled with a 30 inch .223 barrel a few years ago for F Class and had to crank almost all the left wind into a Bushnell 4200 Tactical to get a zero. Looking down the top centreline of the scope shows it pointing obviously way off the centerline of the muzzle. The factory jig for the ring base holes on top of the action must have been skewed when the holes were drilled and tapped.

I happened to have a set of Rem Leupold windage bases with one inch rings from a rifle trade so just had to buy the matching 30mm rings. Solved the problem.

Guess it is a matter of comparing costs to settle on Z-rings or Leupolds.

  • If the action is round and the scope mounting holes are off axis then the rail must get twisted when it is installed. To make do with this I would first lap the top of the rail on the rifle to get it flat (or closer to being flat). Then I would shim the front or rear ring clamp to get the rings closer to the axis of the bore as the op wants to do. If the windage turret is full right (all the way counterclockwise) then shim the rear ring clamp on the right side. Calculate how much shim you need to get the windage turret roughly centered in its travel. Now lap H out the rings until the scope is a loose fit with the ring caps tight. Last, bed the scope.

Did you first MECHANICALLY center windage and elevation within your scope? Within its tube?
