5.56 Suppressor for 6BR?

  • Any reason not to use a 5.56 Suppressor (Surefire 212) for a 6BR bolt action?

There is enough room for it to fly through, but how much "extra" clearance do you need with a professionally threaded barrel, VS any old mil-spec turd with threads on it?

Any idea who to contact with some experience with this and have them cut up my blank?

There is a fellow from across the sea who says another brand works: Here

    Thanks.

[EDIT] Changed my question to reflect proper caliber

  • I set most up to have a bore that is .020" larger than the bullet. They MUST be square and parallel with the bore for good results.--Mike Ezell

  • I assume that is +0.020" radius, or 0.020 clearance per side...

Yea, definitely want tight cylindricity on everything involved  :o

So how is the feeling on 0.019"?  I am assuming a 0.243 projectile, and the baffle I measured was 0.281".

  • No, .020 total. For a 30BR, the hole would be .328, but that's about the minimum. A little bigger is ok. I like to make them .330-.332 for a 30 cal. Go too big and the brake is much less effective. Go too small and accuracy suffers. For a .243, I like .263-.265"--Mike Ezell

  • that can may have enough volume to work with the 30BR especialy considering the faster powders used
    BUT
I highly doubt that the bore through ALL the baffles will be big enough to shoot a 30 cal bullet through , that would be .100" over bullet diameter on the primary desgined weapon and that would make for a very very un-effecielt unit.

I have seen 223 cans bored out to shoot bigger bulleyts through but their is a very precise way to do it or you can have major troubles down the road.  you would need to turn a 4"-6" shaft with 1/2x28tpi on one end all cut on the same plane , you then screw it into the can to that you can chuck up on the suppressor and the shaft is your indicating point , you use a setup just like that used to blueprint actions  and indicate off their bore only you indicate off the shaft that is now concentric with the threads

  • My mistake...Thanks JD. Your use of the term "can" made me go back and look at the OP. I was referring to a muzzle brake, not a suppressor. Sorry. I would only be making assumptions about suppressors and proper clearances.--Mike

  • no sweat , some suppressors run very very tight bores to make up for less effecient baffel desgine.
A brake with a .015 to .025" clearance (total over bullet diameter) will work and ise alot easier to get away with than a 7-9" suppressor with upwards of 8 baffels.

I've built a few of my own suppressors on Form-1's and i run a tight bore with a very effecient baffel desgine to i can use less baffles and still get great suppression but i don't thread the suppressor untill last and i use a indicating rod running in the bore of the baffles and thread it on that axis and i have a test stub that i use that the same size as the threads on the barrel so i know that its a true tight class three fit.

I love shooting with a suppressor , make it alot more enjoyable for everybody , my favorite deer gun is a 16.5" , 308 barreled Encore with a awsome little 6" titanium suppressor

Sorry all.  BOY!  Did I screw that up.

Alright, I had the title correct, but I screwed up the initial post.

I am talking about a 6mm Norma BR bullet, not a .30 cal.  Sorry about that.  I have changed the first post to reflect this.  To much reading about the two rounds and have them on the brain trying to decide which to go with (looking at an Eliseo R5 build).  If I can use the suppressor with a 6BR I will be going that direction.

A-men.  I find it interesting that in the US suppressors tend to have the negative shadow that they do, where as in other countries, you are ungentlemanly if you shoot with out them.  Shooting without hearing protection is also safer for your and everyone else because you situational awareness is far superior.

  • Not knowing what the bore on the surefire suppressor is i would say DO NOT shoot anything but a 22 cal bullet through it.
I might consider it if i would pass a long 9/32" drill through it all the way but if not then i would not consider it.

If the bore is to tight the bullet will end up destroying your suppressor and Surefire is gonna tell your to go pound sand when they relice what you did .

  • I would try to contact surfire and ask them.  I wont cost you anything but a little time.  I use a .223 can made by a local manufacturer and shoot it on a 6dasher hunting rifle. The manufacturer told me that he had enough clearance to do this as long as I stayed with the proper twist rate for the bullet that I shoot.   I love the combination except the gun is a little front heavy.  Very quite, you can usually here the bullet impact the deer.

    That is NOT helping!  ;D

Contacting Surefire is like talking to my garage floor.  ::)  Maybe I will get Howard on a good day, but for the most part that section of the company opperates on geological time scales, nd I doubt that I will get anything but a quick "No" anyway.  May as well try anyway.

JD: I am going to use a ground tool steel rod to try what you mentioned.  I migt get a couple to few if there is any tapering from front to back (I won't be able to tell if the blast baffle is tight but they get bigger and smaller again).
