1 in 9 Twist 22LR barrel for Ruger 10/22

  • I noticed online a vendor offering a 16-1/2" barrel for the Ruger 10/22 in a 1 in 9 twist, stating that is was for subsonic 22LR ammo including Aguila 60gr. ammo. I'm looking for comments--pro or con on this barrel.  I rarely shoot anything other than standard or "subsonic" anyway. Are these barrels as accurate as a 1 in 16" when using subsonic ammo?

  • They are mostly made for the 60 grain ammo.  It probably won't be as accurate as true match ammunition, but I have seen the fast twist 22's put these in half an inch at 25 and 50 yards!

In fact, I've even seen those bullet keyholing and shooting an inch at 50 yards.  That would make a nasty wound.

  • How well do they work with 40gr. ammo?

  • I've never had a 1-9 but understand they are for the 60 grain only. For standard velocity 40 gr the 1-14 works in cold calm conditions and 1-17 in hot windy conditions. I have a couple of 17 twist and a bunch of 16's. The 17's of mine don't do well below freezing but that might be because I am shaking. ;D

  • volquartsen and lilja make a 9" twist barrel for 10/22 .22lr.  i will be ordering the lilja.  it will be for the 60 grain aquila sss.  from what i have read about this combo, it shoots great.

  • Normally the slower the twist the better the accuracy. I really doubt 1 in 9 is required for the 60 grain bullets. Certainly is not required for the 40 grain. Virtually all 22LR target ammo is subsonic and the preferred twist is in the 1 in 15 or 16 range. Velocity has little effect on required twist.

  • well, i have used the 60 grain aguila out of a 16" twist and at 40 feet the bullets were hitting the target sideways about 50% of the time.  what the 60 grainers offer is more energy down range and the ability to stay stable at long range if shot out of a fast twist.

  • I have tested a 10/22 with a 1 in 9" twist Volquartsen barrel (they are nicely executed and come with a match chamber) extensively with the Aguila 60gr SSS round, 40gr bulkpack ammo and 38 grain subsonic ammo. It works great with the 60gr Aguila round (50yd 5 shot groups averaging .460"), but doesn't care for 40 grain high velocity rounds (average 5 shot group size increases about 1/4" at 50 yards with the bulk pack ammo) and likes 38gr subsonic ammo even less - dropping the velocity of "normal" weight .22 bullets to the subsonic level doesn't help at all with the 1 in 9" twist barrel. The 1 in 9" twist .22 RF barrels are strictly a 60gr Aguila proposition if you are interested in minute of squirrel or better accuracy. Precision isn't there for normal weight HV or subsonic rounds.

The 1 in 16" twist rifles in the test generally had poor accuracy with the Aguila SSS round, compared to their performance with the 40gr bulk pack ammo, though one of them would group about the same as with the bulk pack ammo, then throw an unexplained flyer wide enough to open up the group. Generally, 1 in 16" rifles that shoot the 60gr SSS round with decent precision are rare birds, and you still have to deal with the occasional unaccountable flyer.

  • This would be a 14 twist 10/22 barrel that was the result of some extra parts, and boredom.
I put it together for my 12 yr old daughter as a fun gun.  Never fired it with anything but the red dot, and cheap bulk ammo, but it shoots minute of dot.

  • My 1 in 9 twist test rifle came about the same way - too many parts lying around, too much time on my hands and a local 'smith that does really great 1/2-28 threads on the muzzle of any barrel I bring him, plus a Yankee Hill can for a .223. Try the Aguila 60gr SSS round in your daughter's 1 in 14" twist barrel; it might work fine.

Since the can is for a .223, when combined with the unfluted SS bull barrel, the whole rig is pleasantly muzzly heavy, lol.

  • This is interesting.I have an ar-15 in 1-7 twist. When I convert it to 22 rf with the kit that came with it ,it shoots great.I am talking 1/2 inch at 50 yds.It almost outshoots my custom 10-22 at that range.Interesting, and I dont understand it.Most of my guns are 1 in 16 twist.

  • I realize this is an old thread, but Aquila SSS stuff comes up almost every week on rimfirecentral.com.

Here's what you can typically expect at 25 yards with a good 1:9 barrel (mine is a VQ that I picked from their bargin bin several years ago).
